Since this month we celebrate women, we asked our female co-workers what it’s like to be part of the Fabrit team and what they would like to say to their fellow females working in IT.
We are proud that Romania, together with its neighbor Bulgaria is among the top countries in Europe when it comes to women working in tech & science: over 60% of employees working in those fields are female. For the last couple of years, Romania is placed among the leading countries in terms of women working in tech-related fields.
Furthermore, Romania ranks 6th at the top of the countries with most female inventors.
We are a British-born company, that wanted to go back to its roots and grow in a solid technical ecosystem. As a result, our development capabilities are located in Romania, in Cluj-Napoca, and Oradea – two of the IT hubs with the fastest growth in the country.
With all these in mind, we’d like to share with you some insights from the Fabrit girls, who we are, and what it’s like to be part of the Fabrit team.
Breaking Stereotypes
The stereotype that women should reconsider their careers in tech, does not apply to us as a team.
We had a perfect balance of 50%-50% of our internship graduates last year. This also came as a result of the fellow female IT graduates. Cluj-Napoca and Oradea are within the largest university centers in the country, with more and more students joining to study tech-related fields each year.
This is one of the messages the entire Fabrit girls wanted to share: don’t be afraid to take up a career in the tech industry. There are quite a few females working in this field already, we are here, and we encourage fellow females to join the tech industry if that is what they pursue. The tech community is highly supportive.
The only debate we can’t settle is the optimal temperature in the office. 😊
A Growing Community
A few of the Fabrit girls told us that this is the biggest female team they have joined so far.
Almost 40% of our colleagues are female, and the number is growing as our team is constantly growing. “This is probably the biggest team of girls I even belonged to” said Ana Kiss, Senior Technical Lead.
We are happy we have a community to belong to. Being a well-balanced team, it’s easy for us to bring people together and form a tight community.
Highly Supportive
We started as a male-based company. The team initially grew through recommendations. But as we introduced new departments and launched the internship program, we brought a much-needed balance to the team.
The first girls to join the Fabrit team told us the team – although small, was incredibly supportive. We’re glad to see this didn’t change. “Everyone’s needs are equally important and valued. We get quick support for our tech queries from anyone who can help.” said Mia Jugan, QA Engineer.
We are a tight-knit team, we help and support each other, whenever it’s a piece of advice about a tech problem or support for personal issues.
We held regular performance reviews and we all agree that at the end of the day it matters the end results resulted from our team’s efforts.
Everyone is equally worthy, and we support each other.
Opportunities Beyond Developing
As a growing team, we are constantly working on updating our internal processes.
A handful of our Fabrit girls are either running or co-running departments, projects, or the internship program.
“Together with senior colleagues, I helped coordinate the internship program. I was pleasantly surprised that I was trusted with a role I had no previous experience, but a lot of interest to experiment. Although I was a junior developer, people trusted and supported me every step of the way. This experience helped me a lot and made me realise my career can have different paths. If you’re surrounded by the right people, you can find what’s best for you.” said Adrien Erika Samel, Full-Stack Software Engineer.
If you’re looking for further challenges beyond just coding, you’ll sure find something to pique your interest within our team.
